The Children’s Conference of the Future in Support of the United Nations The Project Event in New York 2024 was held on Wednesday, July 17 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Children’s Conference of the Future in Support of the United Nations is a peace communication forum where children around the world gather to discuss a peaceful and prosperous world centered on the SDGs, and was launched as an official program of the 2019 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
At the project event held at UN Headquarters this time, nine Kids Ambassadors, representing elementary and junior high school students from Japan, presented their ideas for realizing peace and solving climate change, which they came up with at the “4th Global Children’s Future Conference Supporting the United Nations” held on March 24, 2024, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Conference Hall.
In addition, guitarist MIYAVI, who is a UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) Goodwill Ambassador and a board member of the “World Children’s Future Conference in Support of the United Nations,” gave a live performance and introduced “That’s What I’m Gonna Be,” the theme song of the “World Children’s Future Conference in Support of the United Nations,” which he produced, with the children.
On Thursday, July 18, nine Kids Ambassadors visited the Nippon Club and created peace-themed artwork under the guidance of Ms. Koh, an artist active in New York. Ms. Koh will now create a painting that links to the artwork created by the children, and connect them to create one complete piece of artwork. This artwork will be exhibited at Expo Osaka 2025 next year.

Artist (Profile)What is Peace? When we think of peace, adults and children think differently, and each individual has his or her own thoughts. I asked the children to freely draw what they think of peace. Some children drew crabs and some drew music, which was refreshing because I had never thought of crabs as a symbol of peace before. Moreover, it was interesting to see their ideas, such as drawing a yellow crab.
The children’s personalities varied during the process of drawing art. They were the complete opposite of the nervous, honor student children I had seen at the UN the day before. The children were so cute and full of individuality that it made me happy as well.
The theme of Expo 2025 is “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” The theme is intended to make individuals think about how they want to live and how they can maximize their potential. It is also intended to drive co-creation by the international community in designing a sustainable society that supports individuals’ ideas of how they want to live. The artwork drawn by the children is filled with their thoughts about the future of society.
