FUKUSHIMA PRIDE OF SILK, 2017 Autumn Winter Collection

Opening March 3rd: Fukushima Pride of Silk -2017 Autumn Winter collections at The Nippon Gallery.

In 2011, some noteworthy Fukushima textile artisans united to create Fukushima Pride of Silk. Each artisan is well established in their respective craft; yarn-making, weaving, knitting, and sewing. By combining their knowledge and skills, these creators have produced a line of high quality apparel.

Since the nineteenth century, silk exports have played an integral role in the economic growth of Japan. Fukushima, has a rich history in the art of sericulture – spanning over 1,200 years.  Time-tested, sophisticated methods have been handed down from generation to generation. These traditional methods are now combined with modern braiding and reforming technologies to produce their high quality fabric. This unique balance of tradition and innovation sets Fukushima Pride of Silk apart from all others.

Fukushima Pride of Silk has love for all natural fabrics, recognizing these fibers have supported and enriched human life throughout history. Fabrics such as silk and linen remind us of this enduring relationship between humans and nature. It is their sincere hope that their customers feel this connection when wearing their products.

The brand was founded in 2011 after the Great East Japan Earthquake. When understandably, many local companies were considering quitting their businesses. In order to support each other, some Fukushima fashion industries collaborated to promote and export their products throughout the world.

Fukushima Pride of Silk’s logo was inspired by each member’s craft. In the center, there is a silk bobbin, with the three sticks protruding from on the top from the left, a “latch needle” used for knitting, a “weave warp thread” used for woven textile fabrics; and a “needle” used for sewing. The logo is adorned on either side with mulberry leaves, which are eaten by silk worms. The logo is symbolic of their strong desire to promote Fukushima companies which are engaged in the four industries of silk threading, textiles, knitting and sewing.
