An exhibition to commemorate the110 anniversary of the founding of The Nippon Club
Dr. Hideyo Noguchi in New York, New York

The Nippon Club is New York’s oldest Japanese social club, providing the Japanese and American communities alike with a variety of events, workshops and cultural classes. The Nippon Club is celebrating its 110 year anniversary this year and will hold a special exhibition focusing on the life and achievements of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi in New York from 1905 to 1928. This is being done in cooperation with the Hideyo Noguchi Memorial Museum in Japan.

Dr. Hideyo Noguchi arrived in the United States with much ambition in 1900. He started his research and scholarly activity at Pennsylvania University, and then on the invitation by Dr. Simon Flexner, he moved to Rockefeller Institute of Medicine in Manhattan. Inspired by the many looming skyscrapers that characterize “New York, New York”, Hideyo threw himself into his research there.

Hideyo’s study of syphilis spirochete was seen as a major achievement by the medical community at the time, and won him high esteem. He was subsequently invited to give a lecture tour in Europe, and was nominated to receive a Nobel Prize. Besides devoting himself to diligent study at the research center, Hideyo also sought to exchange ideas with people from the world of politics and business. His earnest participation in activities at The Nippon Club were aimed at improving the status of Japanese residents and encouraging amicable relations between Japan and the United States.
