EXHIBITION
“Creatures of Habit: Splendid Techniques In Japanese Art”
For New York Asia Week 2018, Orientations Gallery and Oriental Treasure Box are returning to the elegant Nippon Gallery located on the prestigious 7th floor of the Nippon Club Tower. This year’s event, entitled “Creatures of Habit: Splendid Techniques in Japanese Art,” celebrates the seventh collaborative vetted exhibition. High quality objects by accomplished and recognized artists in the fields of cloisonné enamels, metalwork, ceramics, art lacquer, painting, basketry, carving, and textiles will be on view. Imperial Court Artists and Living National Treasures are significantly included.
“Creatures of Habit” refers to both the objects in the exhibition and the refined techniques of the artists who crafted them. Focusing on animal-form sculptures and ceremonial objects, and depictions on artwork, paintings and textiles. The display will celebrate the intense observations of nature that led to remarkable realism or unique stylization of the range of the animal kingdom: fauna, sealife, birds, and insects.
An illustrative lecture by Hollis Goodall, Curator of Japanese Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, will complement the exhibition on Monday, March 19th at 4pm. The popular standing-room-only lecture has been one of the highlights of Asia Week.
