Stain Artwork from Saga, Japan

Bridge between Japan and the United States~ Banners of Celebration ~
An Exhibition of Stain Artwork from Saga, Japan

Dyes traditionally developed in Saga Pref., Japan are normally used in various banners and flags of celebrations to make the celebrations more cheerful and colorful in order to boost people’s spirit and pleasant atmosphere. Such banners or flags include Samurai Flags or Streamers displayed on May-5 Boys’ Festival wishing for healthy growth of boys, Shinto-Flags set up at Shinto shrines for celebrating a new year or a rich harvest every fall or Fishing Flags used in launching ceremonies celebrating or wishing a big catch of fish. These flags colored with Saga-made dyes also have been traditionally used in Shinto-rituals in Japan.

Also, various types of patterns, used in such flags, have been developed and traditionally used in our daily life for ages. The patterns include those developed for nobles in the courts in Heian Era, those developed and loved by folks in Edo Era, those seen in gardens of esoteric Buddhism temples and those used on Arita Porcelain works, local specialty in Saga Pref. These various patterns have formed Japanese unique and traditional art and culture.

At this exhibition, amazingly-designed tapestries, flags or other works, all of which show the wonderful hybrid of Japanese beautiful patterns and such traditional dyes for Shinto-rituals, will be displayed. We hope you will enjoy the wonderful nature of Japanese culture. Please don’t miss this rare opportunity.
