EXHIBITION

The Craft of Japanese Urushi-Lacquer

Approximately 70% of Japan’s domestic urushi (Lacquer) is produced in Ninohe City, a small town located in Iwate Prefecture in Northeastern Japan with a population of almost 30,000 people. Urushi has been both a form of artistic expression and an inherent part of day-to-day life in Japan.

Joboji-Urushi, the particular Urushi found in Ninohe-city is renowned for its high quality and has been designated as the lacquer of choice in the preservation of World Heritage Sites such as Kinkakuji (the Golden Temple in Kyoto), Chusonji Konjikido (the temple of Iwate), and Toshogu (the shrine of Nikko).

We would like to offer New Yorkers a warm welcome to view a great range of the beautiful Joboji-Urushi works.
