Fabulous Forms and Imagery: Legendary Japanese Artworks

For New York Asia Week 2019, Orientations Gallery and Oriental Treasure Box Gallery are returning to the elegant Nippon Gallery located on the esteemed 7th floor of the Nippon Club Tower. This year’s event, entitled “Fabulous Forms and Imagery: Legendary Japanese Artworks” celebrates the eighth collaborative vetted exhibition. High quality objects by accomplished and recognized artists in the fields of cloisonné enamels, metalwork, ceramics, art lacquer, painting, basketry, carving, and textiles will be on view. Imperial Court Artists and Living National Treasures are significantly included.

“Legendary Japanese Artworks” refers both to these master artists and the splendid techniques displayed in their creations. As well, the themes and forms of the artworks reflect inspiring legends and symbolism of folklore, history, and the religious traditions of Shinto and Buddhism.

An illustrative lecture by Hollis Goodall, Curator of Japanese Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, will complement the exhibition on Monday, March 18 at 3pm. The popular standing-room-only lecture has been one of the highlights of Asia Week.

The Nippon Club is an august organization that is celebrating its 114h year. Located at 145 West 57th Street, the show will run from Saturday March 16 to Saturday March 23 (closed Sunday). Many attendees describe this annual exhibition consistently as the most exciting of New York Asia Week. Several longtime members commented that the show is the finest ever to appear at the Nippon Gallery.
