For New York Asia Week 2020, Orientations Gallery and Oriental Treasure Box Gallery are returning to the Nippon Gallery located on the esteemed 7th floor of the Nippon Club Tower.

This year’s event, entitled “Standing on Ceremony: Traditions in Japanese Art” celebrates the ninth collaborative vetted exhibition.  High quality objects by accomplished and recognized artists in the fields of cloisonné enamels, metalwork, ceramics, art lacquer, painting, basketry, carving, and textiles will be on view. Imperial Court Artists and Living National Treasures are significantly included.

“Standing on Ceremony” includes artworks that reflect the structure of treasured Japanese traditions: objects related to incense and tea ceremony, flower arranging, and ritual in Shinto and Buddhism.  Artworks referencing court life, theater, dance, and samurai culture will all be on view.

An illustrative lecture by Hollis Goodall, Curator of Japanese Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, will complement the exhibition on Monday, March 16 at 3pm. The popular standing-room-only lecture has been one of the highlights of Asia Week.

We will hold a special lecture on “Standing on Ceremony: Traditions in Japanese Art” by Ms. Hollis Goodall, curator of Japanese art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
