Let’s Support COVID-19 Fighters! Progress Report Vol. 13
The Progress Report Vol. 13 March 2022
“Thank you to the Nippon Club for delivering bento boxes to our NYPD24Pct police officers! The healthy and nutritious meal helped them get ready for their tour on patrol to keep NYC safe!”
– Comment from Mr. Naoki Yaguchi, Deputy Inspector, NYPD 24th Precinct
On Wednesday, February 23, we began a new phase of our unique “Bento” box initiative, Let’s Support COVID-19 Fighters!, delivering 100 Japanese bento boxes to the New York Police Department’s (NYPD) 24th Precinct on West 100th Street in Manhattan. The program, originally focused on supporting New York City’s medical community in its battle with the COVID-19 pandemic, has been expanded to include the NYPD, the Fire Department (FDNY), and Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
There are two types of bento: regular and vegetarian. The menu for the regular bento is as follows:
Egg rolls, simmered konjac, shrimp shumai, cherry tomatoes, garden peas, carrots in sakura shape, sweet pickled beets, yakisoba noodles with vegetable sauce, wakame salad, hijiki, gari, boiled spinach with sesame, Japanese fried chicken, simmered vegetables with Japanese vegetable curry sauce, fried crab sticks, vegetable spring rolls, fried vegetable gyoza, fried carrots, fried cauliflower, seasoned rice with mushrooms, and grilled “yuan-yaki” salmon.
The wide variety of colorful Japanese bento boxes made police officers smile.
The Nippon Club originally launched Let’s Support COVID-19 Fighters! on May 7, 2020, shortly after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. We had wondered, “Is there anything we can do?” The answer was to provide Japanese “Bento” boxes prepared by The Nippon Club’s dining service to New York’s frontline medical workers, a project facilitated by the cooperation of the Japanese Medical Society of America (JMSA) and its president, Dr. Robert T Yanagisawa, MD, as well as the support of the Nippon Club member companies, members and non-members. Let’s Support COVID-19 Fighters! will soon celebrate its second anniversary. Donations are always welcome. For more information, please click here.
