The Nippon Club will hold its annual Holiday Party in a hybrid format that allows everyone to choose how they would like to participate. The in-person event will be held on Wednesday, December 14, at the Nippon Club Tower, and the entertainment part of the in-person event will be streamed online for three days from December 21-23. We invite you to come in-person or virtually to view the entertainment and enjoy a sumptuous meal prepared by Chef Yasuoka of the Nippon Club restaurant.

This year’s main entertainment will be classical music. Performers will be harpist Ms. Mariko Anraku, the only Japanese musician of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and soprano singer Ms. Erika Baikoff, who will appear this season at the Metropolitan Opera in Verdi’s “Don Carlo,” Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov,” and Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.”

The in-person event will also allow members to network with other members and enjoy live jazz performed by saxophonist Ms. Erena Terakubo from Manhattan School of Music, and other musicians, at the Bar & Grill on the 4th floor. We will also have some great raffle prizes at the end of the event. Registration is now open, and we hope that you will join us for a fun-filled evening.

Christina Maxwell

Christina Maxwell is a New York City-based singer, actress and executive. She currently serves as Director at Related Companies, advising on artwork acquisition, cultural partnerships and mental health strategy across the national portfolio. In her role, she also works as the Executive Director and face of High Line Nine, the Related Companies’ collection of nine immersive exhibition spaces in Chelsea.

Also, a seasoned singer and actress, Maxwell frequently performs in concerts and appears on television. Recently, she was seen performing with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra musicians on EDGE in New York City, headlining at Festival Napa Valley and starring on television as the new face and voice of HUMIRA’S national commercial campaign.

Mariko Anraku

Mariko Anraku, active as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, is hailed as a “masterful artist of intelligence and wit” (New York Times) and “a manifestation of grace and elegance” (Jerusalem Post). Since 1995, she has held the position of Associate Principal Harpist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Since her debut as soloist with the Toronto Symphony led by Sir Andrew Davis, Ms. Anraku has appeared with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and New Japan Philharmonic among others. As a recitalist, she has performed in major concert halls including Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Jordan Hall in Boston, Opera Comique in Paris, Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome and the Casals, Kioi and Oji Halls in Tokyo. Her impressive list of awards includes First Prize at the First Nippon International Harp Competition, First Prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York, the Pro Musicis Foundation International Award, as well as Third Prize and the Pearl Chertok Prize for the best performance of the required Israeli composition at the 11th International Harp Contest in Israel. Ms. Anraku’s strong commitment to expanding the boundaries of contemporary harp repertoire has included invitations to premiere works by Toshio Hosokawa at the Donaueschingen Musiktage in Germany and the Wien Modern in Austria. She also gave the US premiere of Jean-Michel Damase’s Concerto “Ballade” with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. She has recorded exclusively for EMI Classics, including 3 solo albums and “Beau Soir” a duo album with eminent flutist Emmanuel Pahud. Ms. Anraku is a faculty member at the Manhattan School of Music and PMF (Pacific Music Festival). She often serves as a jury member at competitions, most recently at the 20th International Harp Contest in Israel. She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the Juilliard School and is a recipient of an Artist’s Diploma from The Glenn Gould School in Toronto. Her teachers have included Judy Loman, Nancy Allen, Lanalee deKant and her aunt Kumiko Inoue. She also studied Oriental Art History at Sophia University in Tokyo and enjoys playing community service concerts at hospitals, drug rehabilitation centers and other venues.

Erika Baikoff

Russian-American Soprano, Erika Baikoff, is a recent graduate of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. This season she returns to the MET as Tebaldo in Don Carlo, Nanetta (cover) in Falstaff and Zerlina (cover) in Don Giovanni.

As a Lindemann Young Artist, she sang the roles of Xenia in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov and Barbarina in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. At Maestro Nézet-Séguin’s invitation, she joined the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra’s tour of Das Rheingold and was featured as the soprano soloist in Mahler’s 4th Symphony with Maestro Rustioni and the Ulster Orchestra. The 2021/2022 season also included debuts with Schubertìada and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, both of which she will return to in future seasons.
In 2018-2020, Erika was a member of the Opéra National de Lyon Studio, where her roles included Le Feu/ Princesse/ Rossignol in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, Juliet in Boris Blacher’s Romeo and Juliet, Anna in Verdi’s Nabucco, and the soprano solo in Mahler’s 4th Symphony.

Erika is the first prize winner of the 2019 Helmut Deutsch Liedwettbewerb and the 10th Concours international de chant-piano Nadia et Lili Boulanger with her duo partner, Gary Beecher. Other awards include a Sullivan Foundation Career Development Grant, 2020 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Semi-finalist, Career Bridges Grant, Mondavi Young Artist Founders’ Prize, and the Bouchaine Young Artist Scholarship.

Erika is an alumni of the Atelier Lyrique at the Verbier Festival, where she sang Musetta in Puccini’s La Bohème, and the Académie Vocal Residency of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in French Studies from Princeton University and a Master of Music from The Guildhall School of Music.

Erena Terakubo

Erena Terakubo was born in Sapporo, Japan. She began playing the alto saxophone at the age of nine. Terakubo played the saxophone influenced by artists such as Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, and Sonny Stitt.

In 2010, Terakubo released her first album, “North Bird” with Kenny Barron, Christian McBride, Lee Pearson, and Peter Bernstein, through Japanese major label King Records. It marked No. 1 on the Japanese jazz charts and was awarded Swing Journal’s Gold Disc. Later that year, she performed with Ron Carter, Omar Hakim, and Will Boulware at the Tokyo Jazz Festival. In 2011, Terakubo recorded her second album, “New York Attitude” with Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Lee Pearson, and Dominick Farinacci. In the same year, she received a presidential scholarship from Berklee College of Music. She graduated in 2015. She moved to New York in the same year.

Terakubo has performed with Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb, Louis Hayes, Vincent Herring, Christian McBride, John Beasley’s Monk’estra, Lewis Nash, and Lenny White just to name a few. In addition, Terakubo has toured around the globe as a leader including Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, Australia, and the Middle East. Terakubo released 6 albums as a leader.
