  Evening of chamber music, Classic Salon Part 1

  The Nippon Club is pleased to host the special music event, “Classic Salon-Evening of chamber music Part 1” on April 24 (Tue) from 18:30 to 21:00.

  Chamber music, music composed for small ensembles of instrumentalists. In its original sense chamber music referred to music composed for the home, as opposed to that written for the theater or church. Since the “home”—whether it be drawing room, reception hall, or palace chamber—may be assumed to be of limited size, chamber music most often permits no more than one player to a part. “Classic Salon” at the Nippon Club, musicians will play their instruments on the same floor with guests, not on the stage, and guest can enjoy music with wine and cheese in a relaxed atmosphere.

  Musicians
  Cello:Ani Kalayjian Ani’s competition successes include winning Grand Prize winner of the International Chamber Music Competition of New England, First prize in the Anglo-Czechoslovak Trust competition in England as a soloist where she was also granted the Bohuslav Martinu Foundation Prize, as well as a top prize at the J.C. Arriaga chamber music competition.  Ani has enjoyed collaborations with such musicians as Ani Kavafian, Jorja Fleezanis, Andres Cardenes, Danny Phillips, Orion Weiss, Kim Kashkashian, among others, and has served as co-artistic director of AGBU’s Performing Artists at Weill Recital Hall.  She was one of two cellists accepted into the inaugural season of David Finckel and Wu Han’s Music@Menlo chamber music festival.  Ani was also featured in a BBC documentary playing in a masterclass with Steven Isserlis at International Musicians Seminar Prussia Cove in England.

  Viola: William Hakim praised for his “warmth of tone and musicality” (Leipziger Volkszeitung), performs, composes and arranges music in many styles. Mr. Hakim is principal and soloist with the New York Symphonic Ensemble, and is also a member of the Iris Orchestra in Memphis, the le Poisson Rouge Ensemble, the Orion Music Ensemble, Pegasus Orchestra, the Hyperion String Quartet, was principal violist of the Glens Falls Symphony, the String Orchestra of New York City, and has played with the New Jersey Symphony, the Princeton Symphony, Albany Symphony, the SEM Ensemble, Argento New Music Ensemble, Lenape Chamber Ensemble, the Solisti Ensemble of New York, and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. In a jazz setting he’s played with Branford Marsalis, Gene Bertoncini at the Jazz Standard in NYC, and with members of the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He was Billy Joel’s violist for his Madison Square Garden residency.

  Violin: Matheus Souza is a Brazilian violinist, instructor and conductor with an eclectic musical background. His early interest in Chôro gave him tools to go beyond the strict classical training imposed in most violinists. Mr. Souza collaborated with masters of the genre, including Joel Nascimento, Jaime Vignoli, and Oscar Bolão. Mr. Souza also participated in music festivals in Bulgaria and Brazil, where he worked with world-renowned artists such as Kurt Masur, Alex Klein, and Antônio Meneses. Mr. Souza received a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music, where he collaborated with illustrious figures including Krzysztof Penderecki, Peter Oundjian, Robert Mealy, and Peter Frankl. Upon graduation, Mr. Souza was the first recipient of the Malcolm L. Mitchell and Donald M. Roberts Class of 1957 award for his excellence in teaching and conducting.
