Welcomes all intermediate learners of English, but is especially recommended for Japanese professionals. This class will help learners to stay up-to-date on the latest developments in America and around the world. It will allow learners to:

– Communicate effectively in English with U.S.-based co-workers, clients and acquaintances.

– Report back knowledgeably to colleagues in Japan about the latest trends in America.

– Be a better-informed and more competitive candidate when seeking career advancement.

Each week, a different article from the New York Times is selected for reading and discussion. The emphasis is on new vocabulary acquisition, correct pronunciation and fluency. Past subjects have included:

– The launch of ChatGPT and the growing dominance of AI

– The rise of the Metaverse in entertainment

– Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s essay on the importance of economic aid to Ukraine

– The South American migrant crisis overwhelming New York City

The teacher of the class is bilingual and has worked in the corporate sector in New York for over 40 years. She holds a Certificate in English Language Teaching from the New School, and has taught Japanese students and international immigrants.
